Press Release - Thursday, August 18, 2011

LAGOS, Nigeria, August 18, 2011: The Chief Executive Officer of Main One Cable Company, Ms. Funke Opeke has been named as one of the top ten women who have made significant contributions to Africa’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector and occupy high profile positions in Africa’s ICT industry, by the IT News Africa magazine, based in South Africa.

Ms. Opeke was ranked alongside other notable women including Nombulelo Moholi, the Special Adviser to the Chief Executive Officer of Telkom; Dr. Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane, a member of the South African Presidential National Commission on Information Society and Development and former CEO of Sentech, and Angela Gahagan, the MTN Business Managing Executive and a twice-nominated candidate for the Africa Business Woman of the Year award.

In a reaction to the feat, Mr. Adebayo Oyewole, Main One’s Head of Marketing and Strategy said everyone at the company was proud of the achievement. “We are thrilled about the position our CEO has attained among so many leading corporate executives, not only locally, but internationally.  To be ranked among the top ten women in ICT in Africa is an exceptional achievement. It is our hope that she will retain her place in the league of achievers who are playing key roles in changing the African ICT landscape”, he said.

Mr. Oyewole described the feat as remarkable because it was the first by a Nigerian female executive. “This is the first time a Nigerian female business executive has made it to the top ten most influential women in Africa. This further underscores Ms. Opeke’s profile as a key player not only in the Nigerian ICT sector but also across Africa”.

Mr. Oyewole further said the accolade was a culmination of years of hard work, dedication and intense focus on building successful ICT enterprises for which Ms. Opeke has become renowned across the world.

Ms. Opeke is an experienced telecommunications executive who founded Main Street Technologies in 2010. She returned to Nigeria in 2005 as the Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria Communications (MTN) after a twenty-year career in the United States.
Prior to her return, she was the Executive Director of Verizon Communications Wholesale Division. Subsequent to MTN, Ms. Opeke advised Transcorp on the acquisition of NITEL and briefly served as the interim Chief Operating Officer, post acquisition of NITEL.
