Broadband: MainOne boss decries lack of backbone infrastructure

Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of MainOne Cable Company, Ms Funke Opeke, has identified lack of a national backbone infrastructure on an ‘open-access’ basis as an impediment to the delivery of broadband services in Nigeria.

According to her, connecting people from the company’s landing point in Nigeria to London costs less than connecting people across Lagos.

She said: “The price of moving Internet capacity from Lagos to Abuja is much higher than the cost of moving capacity from Lagos to London due to high cost of national terrestrial backbone infrastructure. This is partly because you have to buy that infrastructure from people who own it for their own proprietary use.”
